S-5 / MYTH / ENCOUNTER /SHIFTING TERRAIN/ THREAT ENGINE
Shifting Terrain
Card Name: Shifting Terrain
Realm: Science
Suit Meaning: Mind, struggle, calculation, shadow work, truth, and discernment.
Number Meaning: Change, challenge, instability, truth revealed through discomfort, and release.
One Word Summary: Discernment (choosing your battles)
One Sentence Summary: Discernment invites me to choose the battles that protect what is alive in me, rather than spending myself fighting everything that once tried to extinguish it.
Hunter Interpretation:
The battlefield changes.
A route closes. Cover disappears. A target moves. New dangers emerge. Something that looked important becomes irrelevant while something previously overlooked becomes the real threat.
Shifting Terrain tests the Hunter’s ability to distinguish change from priority.
The inexperienced Hunter reacts to everything. Every movement becomes a threat. Every obstacle becomes a problem to solve. Every provocation becomes a fight.
The experienced Hunter asks a different question:
What am I actually here to accomplish?
Discernment means refusing to let changing circumstances choose your battle for you. A Hunter may need to abandon a position, ignore a distraction, change tactics, protect a resource, or let an enemy escape temporarily in order to preserve the larger objective.
Walking away from one fight is not surrender when it allows you to win the one that matters.
Stabby Gameplay Effect
Movement Altered: The terrain changes during the encounter. A route, position, target, or tactical advantage is no longer available as expected.
The Hunter must adapt rather than simply push forward. When Shifting Terrain changes the encounter, identify the current objective and choose what receives your limited movement, resources, and attention.
The challenge is not merely crossing difficult ground.
The challenge is recognizing which ground is worth fighting for.
Flavor Text:
The ground moved. The mission didn’t.
