The Path to Unpunishable, Card 6: The Bound Heart

FAITH REALM · SPRING · WATER
Playing Card: H-A · Ace of Hearts

Opening Image / Sensation

The last card, the Ghost of Approval, is about recognizing that approval may never come and allowing yourself to grieve that truth.

The Bound Heart comes next. It is the grief that knows the pain is temporary. It reminds you that you are stronger than the thing you were afraid to lose, and that behind the loss is the joy you have been yearning for but could not reach while you were still clinging.

When you begin to seek the truth of your situation, new blood moves through your veins. The heart heals. Your steps grow lighter once your nervous system learns what peace feels like.

The Bound Heart still loves. It still seeks kindness and fills with joy. It simply carries scars, and those scars have stories.

Life may not have turned out the way you wanted. The Bound Heart asks a quieter question. Is there nothing here that you love?

Why This Card Matters

Who would you be if everything you identified with was gone?

What would you do if you could never rely on the privileges, access, or roles that once made life feel predictable? If the labels fell away, if the safety nets failed, if the worst thing you feared actually happened, who would remain?

The Bound Heart matters because it asks you to sit with that question without rushing to fix it. Many of us build our sense of worth around what we can offer, what we produce, or how others respond to us. When those things are threatened or taken away, the pain feels existential.

This card does not deny that pain. It tells you that grief does not mean destruction. It means transition. It means learning that your core is not held together by approval, productivity, or permission. It is held together by what you love and what you continue to choose, even when it costs you something.

Personal Story / SSoA Grit

Many of you know I’m adapting Ichabod Jones by Russell Nohelty into a Mörk Borg game. And it was due in October. There’s nothing wrong with the game or the source material. I love the game, the graphic novel and Russ as well.

I had just finished draft 0 of Badges Under Glass, by Breathless hack and I was ready to take this on…

But writing this game gave me night terrors. I cried through most of the character sheet because I knew I would pay for it later with restlessness and dark images that lingered long after I woke up.

I love the source material. I love the games I am hacking. I have been playing RPGs since I was fifteen and making modules not long after that. I want to be excellent at adapting fictional worlds into playable systems.

So why could I not finish this?

I had to ask myself what I was afraid of losing by completing the game. The answer was nothing. For nearly four decades, I have navigated misogyny, racism, cruelty, and narcissism just to stay at the table. People failed me constantly. The game never did.

So the fear was not about the game. It was about identity.

Who would I be if I lost the Shaman States of America? If it were stolen, monetized by others, and I was barred from touching it again? I would grieve deeply. It was the closest I ever came to telling the truth about my life. But I would build another universe. I always have.

the bound heart still beats…

Who would I be if the Lens was taken, twisted, and used to control people? I would be furious. Then I would remember that it was a gift freely given, and free will has consequences that are not mine to enforce. I would still live by it, just farther away from those who misuse it.

the bound heart still beats…

Who would I be if my support system collapsed? My reputation ruined, my character soiled and stained, made a pariah, by those I trusted with my emotional, mental, and spiritual health? I would still be here. I would still make things. I would still love games. I would love the way God made me.

the bound heart still beats.

I am already living the answer, because those things are happening right now.

And that truth scared my nervous system more than the loss ever could.

Lens Overlay

Empathy asks you to recognize how much you have already survived without minimizing it. The Bound Heart does not shame you for flinching or for needing time to heal. It understands that safety is learned slowly.

Truth asks you to name what you are actually afraid of losing. Not the story you tell yourself, but the real cost beneath it. Often, the truth is that you have already lived through the worst parts and are still standing.

Kindness means making decisions based on accurate knowledge, even when you know they will cost you comfort, status, or approval. It is choosing actions that protect your future self, not just your present fear.

Joy is not the absence of pain here. It is the quiet return of aliveness. It is laughter that surprises you after grief. It is creating again without needing permission.

Anti-greed reminds you that nothing truly meant for you can be stolen from your core. People can take credit, access, or visibility, but they cannot take your capacity to build, love, or begin again.

What the Card Teaches the Listener

The Bound Heart teaches that grief is not failure. It is proof that you cared. It also teaches that grief does not get to decide your future.

You are allowed to rest without quitting. You are allowed to let go without disappearing. You are allowed to rebuild without explaining yourself.

This card invites you to regulate your nervous system through small, repeatable acts of safety. It reminds you that confidence is not a personality trait but a practice built over time.

You do not have to grieve everything at once. You do not have to prove that you are healed. You only need to keep choosing what is honest, what is kind, and what allows you to keep going.

The Bound Heart says you are not broken. You are in recovery. And recovery still counts as movement.

The Path to Unpunishable

The Path to Unpunishable is not about becoming untouchable. It is about becoming uncoercible.

The Bound Heart marks the moment when punishment culture loses its leverage. When you realize that even if the worst happens, you remain yourself.

This path teaches that safety is not guaranteed by compliance, silence, or sacrifice. It is built through alignment with your values and the courage to grieve what no longer fits.

When your heart is bound by truth rather than fear, punishment loses its power. You may still feel pain, but you are no longer controllable through it.

Closing Image / Blessing

Imagine a heart wrapped in old bindings, not to restrain it, but to protect it while it heals. Each knot is a lesson learned. Each scar is evidence of survival.

May you loosen the bindings when you are ready.
May your nervous system learn what peace feels like.
May you trust that what you love will find you again, even in new forms.

You are allowed to carry your heart forward, scarred, beating, and unashamed.
